N.O.D.A.

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the main representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of some 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country's leading professional theatres to village halls. Members have access to a wide range of benefits.

NODA is divided into eleven National Regions, each headed by an Region Councillor who sits on the Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives and other volunteers. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies themselves. The Association is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre.

There is a broad spectrum of ages involved with amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies, which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration.

THE NOMADS

The Nomads are one of the newer amateur theatrical societies on the block in the Northants area.

Formed in February 2006, our group is made up of highly experienced members who have been performing in the local area, with other societies, for many years - membership is open and anyone with an interest can join... whether they want to perform of work behind the scenes.

The Nomads' brief is to perform different styles of shows ranging from musical revues, pantomimes, plays to full blown musicals moving between different venues... hence the society's name.

Since we were founded we have staged two successful revue style shows Best Of British (2006) and Broadway And Beyond (2007), three extremely successful Pantomimes - Dick Whittington (2008), Jack And The Beanstalk (2009) and Aladdin (2010) - all at the Masque in Barton Seagrave in Northamptonshire.

In true nomadic style, we staged two highly successful productions Ye Olde Tyme Music Hall (2008) and the hilariously funny play An Evening With Gary Lineker (2009) at the Studio in The Castle in Wellingborough, and the perennially popular musical Anything Goes (2008) in the main theatre at the Castle.

Then it was back to the Masque to stage Stephen Sondheim's musical Into The Woods (2009), which received immense critical acclaim.

We, The Nomads, look forward to seeing you at our next production....

KETTERING YOUTH THEATRE GROUP

Kettering & District Youth Theatre Group notched up their 31st production when Mother Goose opened at the Lighthouse Theatre in March 2008. .

The first ever show was produced in 1974. Over 50 Children are part of the cast each year and to get the show to the high levels the Group expect, over 100 hours of rehearsal time will have been clocked up by the time the show opens.

The shows have come a long way over the years and whereas the first show was staged for a few hundred pounds, these days it costs several thousand pounds to put on a production.

KETTERING OPERATIC SOCIETY

K.O.S. was one of the first performers of musical shows in the town. Founded on March 7th 1919, the society was originally named the Kettering Amateur Operatic Society.
The first work to be performed was "Dorothy", at the Victoria Hall, Gold Street (later the Victoria Picture House - now demolished), on December 16th, - 20th (with matinee), the same year.
Quote from the programme:- "Despite the heavy expense of the production of "Dorothy", the Society was able to hand over to the Kettering and District General Hospital 100 guineas". - a lot of money in 1919!
O those halcyon days when even with "heavy expenses" a company could still afford to give to a Charity at the end of the production. Not like today's situation when we are all fighting to make ends meet.
Let's hope the much anticipated move to the New Theatre will prove profitable for all and, who knows, we may yet again have funds to spare at year end.
Reformed after the war as Kettering Junior Operatic Society under the auspices of Miss Gladys Riseley MBE the Society has continued to offer a wide range of productions to the Kettering public every year since 1947.
